The state-run Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) will export jute goods worth Tk 1.35 billion to Syria this year as part of its broader plan to secure markets in the Middle Eastern countries, they said.

"We (BJMC) will export 30,000 bales of jute bags worth Tk 1.35 billion to Syria for the current fiscal year," a marketing official of the corporation told on Monday.

He said the shipment of jute goods to Syria will start from next month.

"The shipment will be done in phases. It (shipment) will start from June and end in August 2014," he added.

He said the BJMC has taken the move to increase its export in the Middle East. BJMC exports jute goods to Syria, Iran and some other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Bangladesh exported jute goods worth Tk 1.75 billion to Syria during the fiscal year (FY) 2012-13.
