National mourning day
The nation mourns the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today as the government has arranged observance of the National Mourning Day at state level this time. Bangabandhu’s two daughters-Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana-survived the bloodbath as they were in Germany on that black night. The incumbent caretaker government recognised the National Mourning Day and public holiday on August 15 following a High Court judgment. The previous BNP-led alliance government had cancelled the mourning day introduced by the Awami League government in 1996. The national flag will fly half-mast at all government and semi-government offices to show respects to the slain leader on the 33rd anniversary of his assassination. President Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed would place wreaths at the mazar of Bangabandhu at Tungipara today morning and offer fateha.
