Process of exposure to justice of 1971 war criminals has begun: Sheikh Hasin

July 24,2010

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised continued government supports for the victims of cyclone Aila that ravaged parts of the south-western region in 2009 as she visited the affected pid2269-satkhira.jpgareas to oversee the rehabilitation campaigns. "The government supports for increased agricultural yields as well as poultry and livestock sub-sectors will continue for livelihood development of the cyclone affected people," she told yesterday at a huge public rally at Shyamnagar upazila where she also distributed homebuilding grants among the cyclone victims. Thousands of people joined the rally defying heavy rains at the HC Pilot High School where Sheikh Hasina urged the cyclone victims to earn self- reliance taking the advantage of the government supports. In a nearly identical rally at Bagali union parishad maidan at neighbouring Koira upazila of Khulna, she urged people to launch a massive afforestation campaign to supplement government initiatives to develop a greenbelt in coastlines to minimize onslaughts of cyclones and tidal surges in particular. The premier flew in a low altitude in an air force helicopter to get a bird's eye view of the current state of the devastated areas and the reconstruction campaign at the affected four upazilas of Khulna and Satkhira. In both the rallies, she said the deadly cyclone Sidr and the subsequent Aila ravaged the south-western region and left a mark of their wraths through creating water logging at several places. The premier said the government took a massive programme to remove the water stagnation alongside the campaign for regaining the navigability of rivers through dredging. But she asked the concerned officials as well as the local people to ensure appropriate steps to stop intrusion of saline waters in floodplains particularly through severing cyclone or tidal surge protection embankments near the coastlines for shrimp cultivation.

The prime minister also urged the concerned officials and the shrimp cultivators to find alternative ways and explore sustainable technologies for cultivating shrimps in an environment friendly way. Sheikh Hasina told the rally that Taka 20 crore was allocated as grant to extremely affected 10,000 families for rebuilding their houses.
She also noted the government succour campaign offering special house building grants, deep and shallow water pumping tube wells and construction of cyclone shelters. "The government will always stand by you in facing the disasters," she said also listing the government measures for a comprehensive development and safety net programme for farmers, fishermen, elderly people, widowed and husband-abandoned women.
Sheikh Hasina said besides the house building grants, the miseries of Aila and Sidr victims would also be addressed under the government's Asrayan Project, aimed at providing homes to homeless. She said as part of her government's Digital Bangladesh campaign, initiatives were taken to provide computers including laptops to every educational institution with internet connections while E-centres were being set up at each of the Union Parishad office complexes while the employment bank was engaged to extend hands to youths in their efforts for self-employment.
The primer, however, acknowledged economic disparity caused by huge income gap to be a major challenge and attributed the phenomenon to the post-1975 governance following the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members. "We are trying to reduce the disparity," she said. "We will celebrate the golden jubilee of our independence implementing the Vision 2021 in line with the dreams of Bangabandhu's Sonar Bangla," Sheikh Hasina said.
Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Haque and food and disaster management minister Dr Abdur Razzak also spoke at the rally while prime minister's economic affairs adviser Dr Moshiur Rahman and BM Mozammel Haque MP were present in both the rallies chaired by relief and Rehabilitation secretary Mukhlesur Rahman. State minister for labour and manpower Munnujan Sufian joined the second rally at Koira.
The prime minister was briefed through a power point presentation on the post-Aila rehabilitation activities at both the places where she also distributed some solar panels to the villagers. The Aila had ravaged Koira and Dakop upazilas of Khulna and Shyamnagar and Ashashuni of of Satkhira on February 25, 2009 and since then 48,000 people took refuge on the "Bheribandh" or embankment and they were being given 20 kilograms of food grains every month under a Taka 96 crore rehabilitation programme.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
said the process of exposure to justice the perpetrators of
crimes against humanity during 1971 Liberation war has started.

"They will definitely be tried on the soil of Bangladesh,"
she said while addressing a public rally at southwestern
district.

She added that Bangladesh would be turned to the Golden
Bengal as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman with the spirit of the Liberation War.

The premier's comments came two days after three1971 war
crimes related cases filed earlier with lower courts were
referred to the Special Tribunal set up four months ago under the
International Crimes (Tribunal) Act 1973.
