Bangladesh Awami League yesterday urged BNP to withdraw tomorrow's hartal, saying the current situation in the country does not warrant one.
It however said it would not take to the streets to resist the general strike by the main opposition party.
"I urge the opposition leader to withdraw the hartal," AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said.
"Hartal should be the last resort to wage a democratic movement. The situation at present is not like one for which a hartal should be called."
Referring to the reasons BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia stated in favor of hartal, the AL leader said she has resorted to lies. The power crunch is the result of failure to set up power plants during BNP-Jamaat rule, and this government is not persecuting the opposition leaders and workers, he added.
Hanif said the opposition leader tried to make an issue of the Bhola-3 by-polls, but after the June 17 election to Chittagong City Corporation even many a top opposition leader said the election under the present EC was free and fair.
"So what is the justification for a hartal now?" he asked.

She made the call when Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury and a group of scientists involved in decoding genome sequencing of golden fiber jute called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official Ganobhaban residence here this morning. Assuring of her government's all-out cooperation to scientists in conducting more research in this field, she said her administration will provide total support including increasing service tenure, salary scales and other facilities to the researchers until final results of the studies. In this context, she said those research would not bring any
fruitful results for the country if a researcher goes on retirement in the middle of any study due to age bar. Describing the invention of genome sequencing of jute as a splendid one, Sheikh Hasina said with the discovery jute will get back its lost glory as golden fiber of Bangladesh and that will ensure multipurpose use of jute. She congratulated the scientist and team leader of jute plant genome decoding and other researchers for the invention saying that their innovation will play an important role for the overall development of the country. "Jute, once considered as the golden fiber of Bangladesh, had lost its past glory. This invention will play a pivotal role to build a sonar Bangla," she added. Mentioning previous governments' negative attitude toward
research, the Premier said, "When we came to power in 1996, we were astonished to see that there was no allocation in the research sector". Later, our previous Awami League government made a lump sum allocation of Taka 12 crore for research works, she added.

Awami League has taken year-long programs to celebrate the
day
June 23,2010
Today is the 61st founding anniversary of Bangladesh Awami League. On this day in 1949, East Pakistan Awami Muslim League was founded at the historic Rose Garden in Old Dhaka. The party was launched on June 23, 1949 as Awami Muslim League with Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani as president, Shamsul Haq of Tangail as general secretary, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman [then interned in jail] as joint secretary and Yar Mohammad Khan as treasurer. The word 'Muslim' was dropped from its name in 1955 and the party evolved into the Awami League as a democratic and secular political party.
The party, which was at the forefront of all landmark movements for the nation's political and socio-cultural emancipation in the 1950s and 60s, spearheaded the historic six-point autonomy movement in 1966 under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and led the war of independence in 1971.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in parliament Wednesday spelt out her government’s detailed plans to free capital Dhaka from irritating traffic congestion.
The plans include shifting of long distance bus counters from city centers to inter-district bus terminals, introduction of IC Card Ticketing System (E-ticketing), formulation of parking policy which is at final stage, construction of five overpass/flyovers at Mirpur-Zia Colony, Maghbazar-Mouchak (combined) flyover, Jurain Overpass, Kuril Interchange, and Jatrabari-Gulistan flyover.
Replying to a tabled question of Shamsul Huq Chowdhury (AL), Sheikh Hasina said bus-bay, zebra crossing, speed breaker, traffic signs/road signs and parking are being set up at different places of Dhaka City.
She said a survey on Dhaka Urban Transport Network Development Study (DHUTS-1) has been completed with financing from and management of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).
In the survey, metro rail from Uttara to Syedabad has been primarily identified as a priority project to tackle the traffic jam in Dhaka City.
The prime minister said work on a feasibility study on Uttara-Syedabad metro rail began in May this year.
She admitted that it requires 25 percent of road for proper traffic management in Dhaka City but only 7-8 percent roads are in place. New roads need to be constructed to cope with the increasing vehicles coming out on to the streets, she said.
Sheikh Hasina told the House that the Dhaka City Corporation, Communication and LGRD Ministries have undertaken necessary action plans in this respect.
