homecoming-Day_Sheikh-Hasina Awami League and its associate bodies today observe the 31st Homecoming Day of AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with a daylong elaborate programme. On this day in 1981, newly-elected Awami League president Sheikh Hasina returned home after six years in exile following the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by some ambitious and disgruntled army elements in the night of August 15 in 1975. Both the daughters of Bangabandhu-Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana-could escape the August 15 massacre as they were abroad then. Sheikh Hasina was elected president of Awami League at its three-day national council held on February 14, 15 and 16 in 1981. The new Awami League president was received at the then Kurmitola Airport in Dhaka by tens of thousands of people on a rain stricken day chanting full throated slogans---"Joi Bangla, Joi Bangabandhu" and "We assure you Hasina, we will avenge the killing of our father."

Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will exchange views with grassroots-level leaders and workers of Chuadanga district unit of her party at Gano Bhaban at 12 noon on May 20 (Sunday). Office bearers and members of Awami League Central Working Committee, advisory council, executive committee of Chuadanga district unit, lawmakers of the party, administrator of Chuadanga District Council, presidents and general secretaries of upazila, thana, union and municipal units and upazila chairmen and vice- chairmen of the party, mayors and councillors of municipalities, chairmen of the union councils and presidents and general secretaries of the associate and like-minded bodies of the Chuadanga district unit Awami League will attend the meeting.

Sheikh Hasina ranks one of best performing leaders in Asia

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ranked as one of the most popular heads of government among 21 Asian countries in a survey of US based public opinion research organization Gallup.Com. According to the survey available on the website, about 77 percent of the Bangladeshis approved Sheikh Hasina's job performance. In the survey conducted in 2011, Bangladesh Premier ranked seventh among 21 Asian leaders in terms of performance in office.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina here today called for reinforcing cultural exchange among nations saying the global peace could be achieved through letting 'thousand flowers bloom', and our unique cultural diversities to blossom. "Indeed, I believe our cultures do contribute significantly to the beauty of our world and make our lives fulfilling," she said while inaugurating the three-day Cultural Diversity Ministerial Forum of the Asia-Pacific Region, 2012 here today. Culture and heritage have the strength to overcome the fearsome forces of terrorism, extremism and the other challenges of our globalized world, she said.
