Awami League and its associate bodies today observe the 31st Homecoming Day of AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with a daylong elaborate programme. On this day in 1981, newly-elected Awami League president Sheikh Hasina returned home after six years in exile following the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by some ambitious and disgruntled army elements in the night of August 15 in 1975. Both the daughters of Bangabandhu-Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana-could escape the August 15 massacre as they were abroad then. Sheikh Hasina was elected president of Awami League at its three-day national council held on February 14, 15 and 16 in 1981. The new Awami League president was received at the then Kurmitola Airport in Dhaka by tens of thousands of people on a rain stricken day chanting full throated slogans---"Joi Bangla, Joi Bangabandhu" and "We assure you Hasina, we will avenge the killing of our father."
