A gang of 12 to 13 armed extortionists led by
listed terrorists led by JCD cadre Idul and Tanjil came for
collecting extortion from two business farms AJ Money Exchange
Limited and Shapla Money Exchange at Motijheel Commercial Area
under Motijheel police station at about 3.30 pm. After collecting
extortion money, they were about to leave the spot. But, being
informed by a reliable source, a five member special police
team rushed to the spot and intercepted four extortionists at
the ground floor gate. Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Aminul
Islam and Habilder Mohammad Liaquat received fatal injuries
when the JCD cadres shot them from point blank and escaped the
scene leaving the two police personnel dead on the spot. Police
also replied with the gunshots. Both sides locked in a fierce
gunfight when other members of the extortionist gang waiting
outside started shooting to the police personnel. Police source
Kuddus and Idul were injured during the shootout. Police arrested
injured JCD cadre Idul and recovered a point 7.75 bore loaded
pistol from his possession. The extortionists were the active
members of ruling party's student front JCD and they all came
from different residential halls of Dhaka University. The gang
used to take extortion money from different business houses
for a long time. |

The bodies of a missing Old Dhaka businessman
and his son were found in 200 pieces in Gazipur in one of the
most grisly murders over the years, sending shock waves through
the city. The killings of Shamsul Haq and his son Russell Sheikh
came to light two days after police found their driver hacked
to death in Dhamrai, about 50 kilometres off Dhaka, in the first
signs of the macabre incident that underlined security fears
of businesspeople. Police seized movable property of Kajal from
his house in the old quarter of the city after the case was
filed against him as the main accused. Kajal, an activist of
the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, youth front of the ruling BNP, is
also accused of killing police sergeant Farhad on Jagannath
University College campus. |
