Violation of Human Rights: The Recent Trend The present BNP-Jamaat government piled up to power through the election of October 1, 2001 which was termed as the election of manipulation, conspiracy and rigging. The government has completed its one year in the power. This one year of misrule of the BNP-Jamaat government has only produced deterioration of law and order situation, unbridled corruption and state-harbored terrorism. Bangladesh has now become the sanctuary of the killers, terrorists, rapists, toll collectors and illegal arm dealers- in the direct provocation of the government and the ruling party. Government, failing to control the present condition, started a so-called joint action named as “Operation Clean Heart”. In the name of joint action, mainly army action has been carried out so far. The government has not clarified yet the legal base and goal of this action. Notwithstanding, the people of Bangladesh hoped that the army personnel would take proper step against the terrorists and terrorism under the constitutional law and procedure. Bangladesh Awami League invoked the army to pay respect to the opinion of the people and to act according to the constitution of the country. But the hopes and aspirations of the commons were nipped in the bud. The present government has stage-managed the army to arrest and torture the leaders and activists of the opposition. So far, 26 persons have been killed in the army custody, most of them recorded no specified case against them. Every citizen of the country has the fundamental right to take protection under law. But in these cases, conventional law and human rights have been totally violated. |
