Abdul Jalil says at Victory Day festival Alliance government will meet fate of Ayub, Yahya Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil has said the defeated forces of 1971 such as Jamaat-e-Islami, that comprises the BNP-led alliance government, have been ruining all the national achievements one after another to avenge their defeat in the Liberation War. "History of the country’s long, arduous freedom struggle, spirit of the War of Liberation, independence and sovereignty are now at stake under the misrule of the alliance government as it (government) has been fostering the fanatic militancy," he said while inaugurating the three-day Victory Day festival at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital yesterday. Abdul Jalil said a broad-based unity has been reached among the pro-democratic and pro-independence 14 opposition political parties to protect the hard-earned independence and restore the spirit of the Liberation War, which along with human rights and human values have been destroyed by the alliance government during its four years in office. Presided over by the president of Joi Bangla Sangskritik Oikya Jote Salahuddin Badal, the inaugural function was also addressed by Poet Syed Shamsul Huq, Poet Nirmalendu Goon, cultural affairs secretary of Awami League Alamgir Kumkum, Dhaka City Awami League general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya (Bir Bikram), general secretary of Bongobondhu Mahila Parishad Prof Selina Akhter Jahan, general secretary of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote Golam Kuddus and Bangladesh Chhatra League president Liaquat Shikdar, among others. Joi Bangla Sangskritik Oikya Jote has organised the three-day Victory Day festival. Earlier, Poet Syed Shamsul Huq inaugurated the festival by releasing balloons and white pigeons in the sky to the tune of the national anthem performed by the artists of the Jote. Later speaking at a public rally, Abdul Jalil said as the farewell bell for the alliance government has been tolling due to people’s wrath, its cadres had torched the national flag, portraits of Bongobondhu and Sheikh Hasina at the party’s temporary office near Dhaka Medical College on Sunday night. Referring to the last days of military dictators like General Ayub Khan and General Yahya Khan of Pakistan, the Awami League general secretary said at the time of the exit of the two Pakistani dictators, popular leaders of Awami League were murdered and their residences were torched but they could not cling to power. |
