Govt won't implement reform proposal: Sheikh Hasina Opposition Leader Sheikh Hasina Monday alleged that the BNP-Jamaat alliance government would not implement the oppositions' reforms proposal, rather it planned to rig the upcoming national election. "Which is the truth? On the one hand the Prime Minister is saying she will not implement the reforms proposal, on the other they are exchanging letters," she said. The Awami League president was speaking at a function at the party's Dhanmondi office marking the joining of some political leaders to Awami League. Sheikh Hasina said: "We've placed the reforms proposal to establish people's right to franchise and for free and fair election… we have to get united to force the government to accept our electoral reforms demand." Akram Hossain, former presidium member of Jatiya Party (Najiur Rahman) and former chairman of Fultala upazila in Khulna, HMA Rahuf, former president of Dumuria upazila unit of Jatiya Party (Ershad) and Mojibul Huq, former chairman of Fatikchhari UP in Chittagonj joined Awami League with hundreds of their supporters. Referring to the arrest of militant kingpins Shaikh Abdur Rahman and Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, the Awami League President said the government arrested the two JMB leaders, but has failed to nab the other members of the militant network. "Government will have to identify the patrons of the militants; otherwise, it is not possible to curb terrorism," she said. Sheikh Hasina reiterated her demand of international interrogation of the two top JMB leaders alleging that the militant leaders are now kept in 'bridal-hospitality' in the name of interrogation. She was highly critical of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for killing and oppressing opposition leaders and workers and said: "Your master Yahya Khan could not annihilate Awami League and you will also not be able to do so." "The alliance regime is playing with the fate of the countrymen and people wants relief from this situation," the opposition leader said urging the people to get united to build resistance against this terrorist, corrupt and fundamentalist government to save the country. About the Prime Minister's claim that the country has been on the crest of development, she said the Prime Minister's contribution was in pushing up the prices of essentials. "How the Zia family, which once received widow and orphan allowance, could become owners of various industries? Has the broken suitcase of Zia turned into a magic box?" Sheikh Hasina asked. She said the Prime Minister always claims that the country saw huge development in the last four years of her. "I want to ask the Prime Minister: how many metric tons of additional rice have been produced and how many megawatt of electricity have been generated during this period?" Referring to the leakage of question papers of the BCS examination, Sheikh Hasina alleged that the alliance government has politicized the administration by appointing party cadres depriving the meritorious students. Newly joined leaders Akram Hossain, HMA Rahuf and Mojibul Huq also spoke at the function. |
