Siege of Bangabhaban on January 9

Mega-combine's 3-day countrywide blockade begins today

The mega-combine has called for a three-day nationwide rail-road-waterway-port blockade programme from this morning to press home realization of its various demands including rescheduling of the polls, publication of a flawless voter list and relinquishing the post of the Chief Adviser by President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed for creating an atmosphere conducive to holding polls and not deploying the elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in polls duties.

The Awami League-led mega-combine has extended the two-day blockade programme by a day including a siege of Bangabhaban on January 9.

The decision on extension of blockade was taken at a meeting of the mega-combine held last night at Gulshan residence of the 14-party combine co-ordinator Abdul Jalil with Awami League Presidium member Amir Hossain Amu in the chair. Central leaders of the 14-party combine, Jatiya Party (Ershad) and Jatiya Oikya Front and other allies attended the meeting. Later, Abdul Jalil briefed the waiting newsmen on their latest decision of extending the blockade by a day.

Awami League President and the premier leader of the mega-combine Sheikh Hasina announced the action programme from a press conference in the capital on Wednesday when she had also announced boycotting of the polls slated for January 22 and brought allegations against President-cum-Chief Adviser for his actions and activities to bring back BNP-Jamaat alliance at the helm of state affairs.

Leaders of the 14-party combine also exchanged views before finalising the strategies for the blockade programme.

It was decided at a meeting of the 14-party combine and other allies in the mega-combine at the Gulshan residence of the coordinator of the 14-party combine Abdul Jalil on Friday night that after the blockade programme, a new course of action programme would be announced from a public rally at Paltan Maidan by Sheikh Hasina on January 10 marking the homecoming day of founding father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
