Bangabandhu's homecoming day today The historic homecoming day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be observed today. Bangabandhu returned to independent Bangladesh on this day in 1972 from a jail in Pakistan. Bangabandhu was imprisoned soon after Pakistani occupation forces' crackdown in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) on March 25, 1971. Pakistani army arrested Bangabandhu from his Dhanmondi residence and sent to a West Pakistani jail. After a nine-month Liberation War, the nation achieved victory on December 16, 1971, and the then Pakistani authorities were eventually compelled to free the founding father of Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the Awami League (AL) and its front organizations have drawn up elaborate programs to observe the day. Awami League hoists the national flag and party flag at its central office and at Bangabandhu Bhaban in the capital and party offices across the country at 6:00am. Leaders and activists of the party, its front organisations and different other organisations will place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi. A delegation of senior Awami League leaders will lay wreath at the grave of Bangabandhu at Tungipara in Gopalganj today. As part of the program to celebrate the day, a grand rally will be held at Paltan Maidan in the capital at 2:00pm today. In a message on the eve of the historic day, Awami League President and Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina said Bangabandhu himself had described his homecoming as a journey from darkness to light. |
