He demands cancellation of poll schedule It will be a mockery of election: Abdul Jalil The Awami League-led mega-combine last night demanded immediate cancellation of the polls schedule as holding of the national poll on January 22 would not be credible and acceptable nationally and internationally before publishing a flawless, corrected and updated voter list. "The one-sided election which the caretaker government of Prof Iajuddin Ahmed is going to hold on January 22 without proper voter enrolment and not participated by the major political parties will be an election of mockery, nothing else…..People will certainly resist such a farcical poll," said Awami League general secretary Abdul Jalil while briefing newsmen on the meeting of the mega-combine held at Awami League President Sheikh Hasina's Dhanmondi office in the capital. He said, "We want to see how this election be arranged by the caretaker government of Prof Iajuddin Ahmed…..people will resist his attempt at any cost. He must annul the polls schedule." At the meeting, Abdul Jalil said it was demanded that Prof Iajuddin Ahmed must step down from the post of Chief Adviser reforming the Election Commission and publishing an acceptable voter list and then rescheduling the polls. The mega-combine coordinator informed the newsmen that his party President and the premier leader of the mega-combine Sheikh Hasina will announce a fresh course of tough action program from a grand public rally at the City's Paltan Maidan today marking the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's homecoming day. Strongly condemning the police excesses on the national political leaders during the third day's blockade program in the capital, he said national leaders like Tofail Ahmed, Rashed Khan Menon, Nurul Islam, Dilip Barua, Major (Retd) Abdul Mannan were roughed up on the city streets by the police at the instruction of their higher authorities. "Such shameful police behaviour during the caretaker government was similar to that of the attitude of the law enforcers showed in the five-year tenure of the previous BNP-Jamaat alliance," Abdul Jalil said and condemned such a behavior of the law enforcing agencies. He warned the high police officials who had ordered for such a dastardly attack on the national leaders saying that the consequence of such barbaric action would be bad. "They would be tried in the people's court for their anti-people activities if they repeat such behavior in future," the Awami League leader said adding: "Pay respect and honor those national leaders who had immense contributions to the country's independence," Abdul Jalil said pointing at the police administration. Protesting yesterday's police action on national leaders and workers, the mega combine will stage demonstrations across the country, particularly in district headquarters, tomorrow (January 11). As part its central program, a public rally will be held at Muktangon in the capital on that day. Presided over by Awami League Presidium member Amir Hossain Amu, the meeting was also attended by Abdur Razzak, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Kazi Zafarullah, Obaidul Quader, Abdul Mannan, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya (Bir Bikram), Kazi Zafar Ahmed, Ruhul Amin Howladar, Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Ziauddin Bablu, Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Major (Retd) Abdul Mannan, Mahi B Chowdhury, Syed Sirajul Kabir, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Huq Inu, Mainuddin Khan Badal, Md Nurul Islam, Pankaj Bhattacharjee, Haji Abdus Samad, Zakir Hossain, Advocate Enamul Huq, MA Gani and Dr Asit Baron Roy. |
