Nation Pays Tribute To The Martyrs Of 21st August

 

The nation today recalled with a heavy heart the 11th anniversary of the savage August 21 grenade attack of 2004 paying deep homage to the martyrs of the carnage demanding expediting the trials of the perpetrators.

Marking the 11th grenade attack anniversary, the ruling AL, its associate bodies and its left-leaning allies, and other political parties, social-cultural and professional organisations placed wreaths at the temporary memorial erected at the spot of the occurrence at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city paying deep homage to the martyrs.

On August 21 in 2004, the gruesome grenade attack was launched on an anti-terrorism public rally of Awami League (AL) at Banbabandhu Avenue in the capital during the rule of BNP-Jamaat alliance government aiming to eliminate the party leadership.

The then opposition leader and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other front-ranking leaders of AL escaped the carnage.

AL leaders including the then mayor of Dhaka City late Mohammad Hanif and the leader of the opposition Sheikh Hasina's personal security squad saved their party chief forming a human shield.

But, 24 leaders and workers of AL, its associate bodies including the then Mahila AL president Ivy Rahman, wife of late President of Bangladesh Zillur Rahman, were killed and over 500 others suffered splinter injuries in the attack and many of them became crippled for life.

Naogaon District Awami League organised a protest rally at the Shaheed Minar near Tajer crossing with the president of the unit of AL Abdul Malek, MP, in the chair. General Secretary Sadhan Chandra Majumdar, MP, Poura AL President Dewan Sekar Ahmed Shishan and general secretary Mohammad Ali, among others, spoke on the occasion.

In Habiganj, District AL organised a mourning meeting at its office marking the 11th anniversary of August 21 grenade attack with senior vice-president of the AL unit Advocate Sirajul Haque Chowdhury in the chair. AL Jatiya Parishad member Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury, district AL vice-president Sharif Ullah, joint general secretary Advocate Lutfar Rahman and organising secretary Mashiur Rahman spoke it.

In Narail, District Chhatra League brought out protest procession demanding the exemplary punishment of the perpetrators of the attack. The procession was brought out from Rupganj Bus-Stand Chattar and ended at the same place after parading different roads.
