Bangladesh Awami League today nominated Syeda Saira Mohsin, wife of former social welfare minister late Syed Mohsin Ali, to contest the Moulvibazar-3 by-election slated for December 8.
The nomination was finalized at a meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) held at Ganobhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister, on Sunday night.
ALPB Chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.
"The ALPB unanimously nominated Saira Mohsin for contesting the by-poll," an Awami League release signed by Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap said.
The constituency comprising Moulvibazar and Rajnagar upazilas fell vacant following the death of Syed Mohsin Ali.
Mohsin Ali died at the Singapore General Hospital on September 14 at the age of 67.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the by-election schedule on October 29.
According to the schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination paper is November 11, while the date for scrutiny is November 14 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is November 22.
The constituency has a total of 3,47,954 voters -- 1,74,371 men and 1,73,583 women.
