The nation observed the Martyred Intellectuals Day Saturday paying rich tributes to a galaxy of intellectuals who were systematically killed at the fag-end of the war of liberation in 1971 to cripple the Bengalis aspiring for nationhood.

 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the martyred intellectuals by placing a wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Mirpur in the city this morning on the occasion of the Martyred Intellectuals Day.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged the country's womenfolk to hate the war criminals for all time and forge unity against the evil force trying to dislodge women's progress and emancipation. "We have to always nourish our hatred against the war criminals responsible for rape, torture and violence on women, and their supporters," she said while distributing Roquia Padak- 2013 here today.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said only the Election Commission can change the election schedule as the Commission has full independence to take the decision. However, the election will be held within the existing constitutional framework and according to democratic principles in a completely free, fair and neutral manner, she said. Sheikh Hasina said this when visiting UN Assistant Secretary General on Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez Tarannco called on her at her Gonobhaban residence here this evening.
