Zillur Rahman's first death anniversary today


The first death anniversary of former president and veteran politician Md Zillur Rahman, a hero of the historic language movement of 1952 and a close associate of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be observed in the city as elsewhere across the country in a befitting manner today.

In his chequered political career that spanned more that six decades, late Zillur Rahman became the 19th head of the state of Bangladesh on February 12 in 2009. Literally, the late president was the guardian of the family of Bangabandhu following the August 15 massacre of 1975.

As a close associate of Bangabandhu, the late Awami League leader participated in all the national movements including that of the historic language movement of 1952 and the war of liberation in 1971.

Zillur Rahman discharged his responsibilities as the general secretary of the country’s largest party Awami League for 12 years for five different terms.

Family of the late national leader, different political parties, social, cultural and professional bodies will observe the day with various programmes including placing of wreaths at his grave at Banani graveyard in the morning.

Besides, a milad and doa mahfil will be held at Gulshan residence of the late national leader after asr prayers. Central leaders of the ruling Awami League will attend the programme.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote will organise a discussion at the seminar hall of the Central Public Library at Shahbag square at 10am to mark Zillur Rahman’s first death anniversary.

Awami League presidium member and Post and Telecommunication Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui will attend the discussion as the chief guest. The day will also be observed at seven unions in his home town at Bhairab with milad mahfils and discussions.
