Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina seeks help for successful hosting of ICC T20 World Cup

"We have to uphold our glorious past in holding the T20 tournament so that Bangladesh can earn new identity in the global sports arena," she said in her introductory speech in a meeting of National Organizing Committee of the tournament at her Gonobhaban residence here this evening.

Assuring the tournament organizing committee of providing all possible support from the government, the Prime Minister said, a vested quarter like the past may spread propaganda. "But, people of Bangladesh and sport fans have the strength to undo their evil design," she added.

With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the chief patron of the tournament, in the chair the meeting was attended, among others, by chairman of the tournament executive committee Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Post and Telecommunications Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui and state minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder.

Members of the National Organizing Committee of the tournament, cabinet members, chiefs of three services, president of Bangladesh Cricket Control Board (BCB) Nazmul Hasan Papan and director of the BCB were present.

Pointing out the success of Bangladesh in arranging a number of international tournaments in the past the Prime Minister said, those tournaments were arranged successfully despite many obstacles including crisis of power.

She said, the government gives utmost importance to sports and games as it helps building character and mind of the youths and Bangladesh gets familiarity abroad as a sports loving nation.

Biren Sikder informed the Prime Minister that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has already implemented a project of Taka 117 crore for renovation of all stadiums to hold the T20 ICC World Cup.

Bangladesh is the single country to host the ICC World Cup T20- 2014. The tournament to be participated by 26 men and women teams will begin on March 16 and end on April 6.

A total of 16 men's teams will take part in 35 matches while 10 women teams will play 27 matches.

The participating 16 men's teams are Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, West Indies, India, England, South Africa, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Nepal, Hong Kong, UAE and Netherlands.

While 10 women's teams are Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, West Indies, England, India, South Africa, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.
