The directive was given in the regular meeting of the cabinet today at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Muhsarraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the Supreme Court in 2010 declared null and void about 550 ordinances, which were promulgated by the militarily regimes of Zia and Ershad.
In light of the Supreme Court order, he said, the cabinet later decided to continue the actions taken under the ordinances and review the necessary laws and make those in Bangla through amendment, modification and updating.
The cabinet secretary said a total of 257 ordinances would need to be given shape into new laws. But, so far 11 ministries submitted drafts on 16 laws based on those ordinances to the cabinet.
"Huge task of review, amendment and modification of 241 more laws remained pending," he said, adding other ordinances became redundant with the passage of time.
The cabinet also asked the ministries to expedite the process for preparing their respective time-bound action plans, projects and development programmes in light of the election manifesto of the present government.
The cabinet secretary said today's cabinet meeting discussed the issue of lack of manpower at different levels of the public administration, terming it as a hurdle to implement the government decisions and carry forward the development programmes.
The cabinet entrusted the cabinet secretary and a number of other secretaries with the responsibility to create required posts in the government administration and expedite the process to fill the new and vacant posts in collaboration with Public Service Commission (PSC).
The cabinet division has presented a report on execution of the decisions of the present government in the first quarter of 2014. According to that report, the present cabinet in its 10 meeting during the period from January 12 to March 31, has taken 37 decisions, out of which 19 were executed.
During the time, the cabinet secretary said the present government has formulated two policies and strategies, signed six memorandums of understanding (MoU) and enacted two laws in the parliament.
Cabinet members, state ministers in charge of different ministries and secretaries were present.
