3000 new posts of Midwives will be created: PM

"I believe proper planning and coordinated management and huge mass awareness can play effective role in resolving health problems of mothers and children," she said today in a message on the eve of International Midwives Day.

The Prime Minister said three-year diploma in midwifery course has been introduced at seven nursing colleges and 20 nursing institutes. There is no alternative to impart training to service providers for reducing mortality rate of mothers and the newborns, she added.

Referring to this year's theme of the day - "The World Needs Midwives, Now More Than Ever" - the Prime Minister said this theme is very time befitting in the context of Bangladesh.

She said her government has initiated community clinics at union level to reach healthcare services at doorsteps of people. The job status of diploma nurses has been uplifted up to second
class, she added.

The Prime Minister said numbers of doctors and nurses have been increased along with augmenting numbers of beds at district and upazila level hospitals.

United Nations awarded Bangladesh for making incredible success in protecting safe motherhood and child health, she recalled.

The Prime Minister wished all success of the day.
