"Why should we go for understanding with Jamaat? What should be the reason to make an alliance with them? We don't do politics of entente," she said.

The Prime Minister said this while addressing a crowded press conference at Ganobhaban here this morning.

The press conference was arranged on the occasion of her just-concluded three-day official tour to the UK to attend the first-ever Girl Summit.

About the trial of war criminals, the Prime Minister said their trial has begun and verdict is being executed.

"The trial of war criminals would be completed the way we executed the verdict of the killers of Bangabandhu," she said.

On a question about the Supreme Judicial Council to impeach judges of the higher courts, Sheikh Hasina said the council was introduced by military dictator Ziaur Rahman and it does not match with the constitution of the country as Bangladesh has a parliamentary system of democracy.

As per the 1972 constitution, she said, the power to impeach the judges was in the hand of the Jatiya Sangsad. But after grabbing power, General Zia scrapped the provision in a military order and handed over the power to impeach the judges to the Supreme Judicial Council, she said.

The Prime Minister said the rule of General Zia has already been declared illegal by the apex court. Later we have formed an all-party special committee and the matter was raised at that time, she said.

She said the Law Commission, Human Rights Commission and others have suggested restoring the article of the constitution which gives power to the lawmakers to remove judges as the country has a parliamentary democracy system.

Mentioning that the people are the owners of the state, Sheikh Hasina said the power to impeach the judges should be kept in the hands of the public representatives.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam were present at the dais with the Prime Minister.

Besides, PM's Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury and Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil were present on the occasion, among others.
