AFI honors Bangladesh Bank for promoting mobile banking services

The Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI), a forum of central banks and other financial regulators working for greater financial inclusion, selected BB for its first ever award at its Global Policy Forum (GPF) meeting in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The AFI has introduced the award this year in order to promote successful financial inclusion polices within the AFI Network.


During the Awami League led government's second term to office, the central bank took initiatives in early 2010 to provide financial services to the unbanked population living in urban and rural areas.
Now 17.6 million people have opened accounts so far in availing the mobile financial services which is growing day by day. Upon BB's permission, 28 banks are providing the services to their clients through 468,000 agents, with an average daily transaction worth Tk 365 crore.
