Germany Satisfied With Stability In Bangladesh, Praises PM For Settling Maritime Dispute With Neighbours

She also highly praised the role of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in settling maritime dispute with India and Myanmar terming the initiative as a model that could be followed by other nations.

Markel came up with the appreciation at a meeting with Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of the 10th ASEM Summit that began in Italian city of Milan today, according to a message received here.

Briefing newsmen, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said the two leaders discussed issues relating to bilateral and international affairs.

PM's Deputy Press Secretary Bijan Lal Deb was also present at the briefing.

The German chancellor expressed her interest to talk to Sheikh Hasina in the meeting room of the Milan Congressi prior to attending the opening ceremony of the 10th ASEM Summit.

Markel lauded the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina in achieving socioeconomic progress of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Prime Minister described various measures undertaken by her government for the welfare of the garment workers as well as ensuring their safety and security at the workplace.

In this regard, she mentioned that her government has increased wages of the workers by 226 percent in the last five years.

In reply, the German chancellor expressed her satisfaction over the steps the Bangladesh government taken for the welfare of the RMG workers.

The Prime Minister also exchanged greetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Bruneian Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Principal Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder and Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy Shahdat Hossain were present.
