Recently, two high profile lies by BNP on the international stage have been exposed publicly. Firstly, International Business Times ran a story on Bangladesh’s political situation where it was alleged that certain UN Congressmen had condemned the current government’s action against BNP chief Khaleda Zia. However, it later transpired that the statement was in fact fraudulent which was sent to IBT by a senior aide to BNP Vice Chairman Tareque Rahman. Two US congressmen later denounced the statement, made it abundantly clear that no such statement were issued from their side and said it was ‘unacceptable’ that BNP would seek to use a fraudulent press statement from the U.S. Congress to advance their political goals (News Link: http://bit.ly/14DOGzS).
Secondly, Khaleda Zia’s Press Secretary Maruf Kamal Khan claimed, which was confirmed by top BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, that chief of India’s ruling party BJP, Amit Shah, had called on Khaleda Zia, and enquired about her health and expressed concern over her current ‘confinement’. However, subsequently Amit Shah has confirmed personally to several Bangladeshi media outlets that this was false. Not only what did he not say what was alleged by BNP, but the purported telephone call itself did not take place. Top BNP leaders lied between their teeth about the contents of an imaginary and non-existent telephone call (News Link:http://bit.ly/1BUGLJ9).
However, this is nothing new for BNP. Their reliance on fraud and lies started becoming crystal clear when Khaleda Zia, simply to paint the Awami League government in a negative light, wrote an OpEd in Washington Times (News Link: http://bit.ly/1gkQ7mZ), urging western governments to impose “travel and other sanctions” on Bangladesh. Later on, in Parliament, Khaleda Zia publicly lied about not writing the article in question. However, Washington Times stated that indeed Khaleda Zia was confirmed as the author before the article was published (News Link: http://bit.ly/Ns11zb).
