A meeting was held at Setu Bhaban on Sunday to discuss the proposal on building 'Dhaka Subway' at an estimated cost of $8.14 billion, the Bridges Division said in a media release.
According to the proposal, the subway line-1 will be set up on a 32-kilometre stretch from Tongi to Sayedabad via Airport, Kakoli, Mohakhali, Moghbazar and Paltan at $5.265 billion.
It would be extended to Naraynganj later, the release said.
The subway line-2, from Aminbazar to Sayedabad via Gabtoli, Shyamoly, Asadgate, New Market, TSC and Ittefaq intersection, would be 16 kilometres long and extended both ways later. The estimated cost is $2.87 billion.
The release said the Bridges Division is planning the underground metros following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's verbal instruction.
After the Bridge Authority had initiated the preliminary work, the Prime Minister's Office sent a letter to the division emphasising faster work on the issue.
The division said it has proposed underground metros because easing traffic congestions in Dhaka has become a complex issue for the mass transport.
BRTA Chairman Md Nazrul Islam, Bridges Division Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam, Dhaka South Mayor Sayeed Khokon, among others, were present at the meeting.
Former BUET teacher Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, who headed the consulting committee of the 20-year Strategic Transport Plan (STP) for greater Dhaka City, chaired the meeting.
