'Awami League is the most popular party in Bangladesh' - Says Democracy International survey.

The survey finds that the people of Bangladesh have remarkable support for the parliamentary democratic system and they want to exercise their voting right to protect democracy in Bangladesh.    

The survey shows, if BNP would have participated in the election of 5th January,   around 43 percent people would vote for Awami League and around 35 percent for BNP; which clearly indicates the victory of Awami League. 

The fieldwork for the survey was conducted from January 11th-15th, with 1,500 respondents aged 18 and above, through random sampling and which meets international standard.

The findings of the survey were released at the Democracy international office in Dhaka on February 2nd. 

A total of 41% of respondents from areas where elections were held said that they had cast their vote, matching the official figure of 40% provided by the Election Commission.

Seventy three percent (73%) people cast their vote to exercise their voting rights and to fulfill their duties as good citizens as motivating factors. When the people were asked why they cast their vote for, 38% of them vote for establishing their right to vote and 35% of them want to act as good citizens of the state.

Adding to that, 83% of the respondents show full support to the parliament as they think the parliamentary system is the right way to practice democracy. 

 According to the survey, 81% people don’t support the continuation of Hartals and Blockades. Seventy four percent (74%) people suggest BNP to engage in dialogue with this government immediately. 

Ninety one percent (91%) people think government should focus on developing the country’s economy.  Eighty five percent (85%) of the respondents supports bringing the perpetrators of the recent violence under justice. Sixty three percent (63%) people want that the government should continue the trial and execution of the war criminals.

The survey shows that, the people of Bangladesh have no support to violent political activities by the opposition. Sixty three percent (63%) of the respondents think that nothing justifies violence, BNP should engage in dialogue as soon as possible. Fifty two percent (52%) people think that BNP’s boycotting the election was not successful.

The findings of the survey indicate that to build a prosperous economy, establishing peace and above all, for the development of the country, people’s confidence on    Bangladesh Awami League is getting stronger.
