About 5.4km of Padma Bridge is now visible with the 36th span installed on Friday, taking it one step close to the long awaited reality that was once a dream.
The span was installed on pillars two and three at Mawa point at around 9:42 am, confirmed Dewan Md Abdul Quader, project manager (main bridge) and executive engineer.
With the installation of the 36th span, only five more spans remain to be installed as the total number of spans is 41.
Engineers said the span-installation work gained momentum in October after being closed for the last four months due to rains. Four spans were installed this month and the previous span was installed on October 25.
There are plans to install the remaining spans by December 10.
Construction of the 6.15-kilometer bridge began in December 2014 and is expected to be completed in June 2021, although project officials said it may take extra time.
Even if the installation of the spans is completed in December, there is still more work to be done including the installation of slabs, gas connection, and rail line connection.
Some of the steel bars of the railway have been submerged due to river erosion. They either have to be picked up, or new ones have to be brought.
For all these reasons, it will take some extra time to complete the bridge.
