From 2001 to 2006, BNP-Jamaat leaders looted the properties of ordinary people without limit. Public Works Affairs Minister Mirza Abbas allotted land worth Tk 100 crore to the close persons of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. Even, this BNP leader sold the railway land worth Tk 78 crores for only Tk 5 crores by misappropriating crores of money.

Bangladeshi media published reports on corruption after the caretaker government came to power in 2007. On March 19, the Janakantha reported that the Ministry of Housing and Public Works sold 13 acres of railway land in Shahjahanpur as plots just before the expiry of the government. Minister Mirza Abbas allotted the land to his relatives and party people.

Though the market value of land in Dhaka’s Shahjahanpur area was Tk 30 to Tk 40 lakh per Katha in 2006, it was sold at the price of only Tk 40 lakh per Bigha on the orders of Mirza Abbas. Accordingly, 13 Bigha land was sold for only Tk 5.2 crore which was supposed to be Tk 78 crore. Mirza Abbas looted a huge amount of money by selling the land at a discount of at least Tk 73 crores.
