Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), called Bangladesh's economy a 'model' for the world.
Foreign Minister AKM Abdul Momen said she made these comments during a courtesy call on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Riz Carlton Hotel in Washington DC on Saturday.
The Foreign Minister said that the IMF MD has greatly appreciated the unprecedented progress of Bangladesh in various sectors under the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina which has stabilized the economy of Bangladesh after the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Bangladesh is a role model in the world (in terms of overall development) because the country has managed to keep the economy stable even after the Corona pandemic," Momen quoted the IMF managing director as saying.
The IMF chief said that leadership like the Prime Minister of Bangladesh is needed to face all the obstacles and move forward on the path of prosperity.
She said that Bangladesh has achieved significant progress through extensive development of infrastructure and efficient communication and maintaining law and order.
Apart from this, Kristalina also appreciated maintaining macroeconomic stability during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh informed the IMF chief about various initiatives of the government to ensure the overall development of his country.
She said, "The development of the country did not happen in a day but it is the result of a long-term plan."
Sheikh Hasina said that while she was in prison during the military-backed caretaker government, she planned the way she wanted to develop Bangladesh and after coming to power for the second term in 2009, she started working according to that plan.
He briefed the IMF chief on Bangladesh's steps in addressing the adverse effects of climate change and empowering women.
The Prime Minister appreciated the role of the IMF in Bangladesh's development journey and hoped to continue its support in the future.
